Ugly Christmas Dog Bandana

Ugly Christmas Dog Bandana

Cecilie Hemsen Berg

The Ugly Christmas Sweater has been a staple during the holidays for many years.  The creative sweaters often include festive patterns, bells, tassels and tinsel. The trend has become so popular it even has its own official day on December 21st. Include fido this 21st by making them a homemade ugly Christmas bandana!

Bandana supplies

  • Old fabric scraps or an old bandana in festive colours*
  • Scissors, needle and thread
  • Fabric glue
  • Old Christmas decorations
  • An iron
  • A little imagination and humour

*If you use an old bandana, you can fold it in half and sew the edges. Just keep an opening for the collar (see pictures). You can then skip to step 5 of the recipe.

Decoration ideas

  • Bells
  • Bows
  • Felt cut into Christmas shapes (Christmas tree, Santa hat, heart, star, etc.)
  • Patches that can be ironed on
  • Tinsel
  • Beads
  • Buttons

This is how we made our 2-toned bandana:

  1. Cut 2 squares from two different coloured fabrics, 32×32 cm each. *if you want to make a plain bandana, cut only 1 square and skip to step 4.
  2. Cut diagonally from corner to corner so that you get 4 triangles.
  3. Sew together 2 triangles, one from each colour to make a square (you will have enough fabric to make 2 bandanas if you wish).
  4. Fold and iron all 4 sides of the fabric square to make a neat edge. Fold the bandana diagonally in the middle so you have a triangle with 2 different sides.
  5. Sew the edges together by hand, and be sure to leave an opening for the collar to be fed through the bandana.
  6. Decorate the bandana by glueing on old Christmas decorations, sowing on some buttons, beads and making it your own.

Voila! Show off your dog in their ugly Christmas bandana at festive occasions this season.
