There are about 40 different ringworm species, and they prefer their own, specific host. Ringworm can spread between humans and dogs. Ringworm feed on keratin, a fibrous scleroprotein you will find in hair, nails, claws, and horns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dogs with a weakened immune system are usually more prone to get infected by ringworm; such as old, sick dogs and dogs with underlying diseases (eg. Cushing&#8217;s Syndrome, but also puppies and young dogs. Small skin injuries, bad hygiene, humid environment and stress are all factors that can contribute to ringworm.&nbsp;Breeds that are more susceptible to ringworm infection are Yorkshire terrier and Jack Russel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Symptoms of ringworm in dogs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>bald, scaly patches with a circular red ring around<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a relatively mild itch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in more severe cases, you will see small boils\/acne-like bumps in the bald, scaly patches\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Treatment of ringworm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>antifungal drugs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>topical antifungal treatment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>good hygiene<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>healthy food strengthening the immune system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Home treatment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/ringworm#home-remedies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coconut oil<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 you can mix the oil with some drops of propolis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com\/3-simple-ways-apple-cider-vinegar-can-help-your-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple cider vinegar<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 soak a cotton ball and apply it topically to the affected areas. NB! Stay away from the eyes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oregano\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/health\/are-essential-oils-safe-for-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">essential oil<\/a>; use 1-3 drops of oregano essential oil per tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil. Massage into the affected area 3 times daily.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Probiotics to keep the gut bacteria healthy, as a healthy gut is key to a healthy immune system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Use disposable gloves when you treat your dog to avoid contamination.&nbsp;If the rash gets worse, stop the treatment and contact the vet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ringworm\u00a0(dermatophytosis) is an extremely contagious fungal infection of the skin.
