De er som regel vertsspesifikke (det vil si at de foretrekker en vert\/dyreart fremfor en annen) \u2013 men kan smitte mellom dyr og mennesker. Det finnes cirka 40 forskjellige arter av disse ringormssoppene, men felles for alle er at de trenger keratin for \u00e5 vokse (keratin finnes i h\u00e5r, negler, kl\u00f8r, horn).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ringorm hos hund er relativt sjelden i Norge, og de som er mest utsatt er gamle, syke hunder og hunder med Cushings syndrom og generelt nedsatt immunforsvar, samt valper og unge hunder. Sm\u00e5 s\u00e5r eller skader i huden, samt d\u00e5rlig hygiene, fuktige omgivelser og stress kan bidra til at det er lettere for soppen \u00e5 f\u00e5 innpass.
